LAS CRUCES, N.M.—
Jamie Brown's first half goal proved to be the game winner as the Utah Valley University women's soccer team shutout New Mexico State 1-0 Sunday at the NMSU Soccer Athletic Complex.
Â
With the win, Utah Valley improves to 10-5-2 overall on the season and ups its WAC mark to 5-2-0. The Aggies fall to 3-14-0 overall and 2-5-0 in league action. The win marks the seventh shutout of the season for the Wolverines.
Â
Brown, a junior midfielder, scored her goal at the 12:14 mark, firing a shot from outside the box past the NM State keeper for the score. Junior forward
Kali Stubbs assisted the goal.
Â
"Jamie took her opportunity and placed a great shot on goal," said Utah Valley head coach
Brent Anderson. "We know she has good attacking instincts and it was nice to see her more involved in the attack. We started a little flat today and it took us a while to get organized. Jamie's goal came at a great time and allowed us to settle in and get more of a rhythm."
Â
Junior keeper
Jessica Duffin recorded her WAC-best seventh shutout in goal for the Wolverines. Duffin faced eight shots in the game and registered four saves. Senior forward
McKell Salmon led Utah Valley with a match-high four shots, including one on goal.
Â
UVU out-shot the Aggies 10-8 on the day, including a 6-4 advantage in the second half.
Â
"The second half we were more organized and actually created some great one-on-one opportunities in front of New Mexico State's goal but lacked a little precision," Anderson said. "We are now looking forward to getting home and preparing for our matches at Clyde Field."
Â
Utah Valley, which has won five of its last six matches, will wrap up regular season play with three-straight home matches. This week, the Wolverines will host Chicago State on Friday at 7 p.m. MT and Missouri-Kansas City on Sunday at 2 p.m MT.
