OREM, Utah—Freshmen
Libby Weber and
Tori Smith each scored goals to lead the Utah Valley University women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout over Misssouri-Kansas City Sunday at Clyde Field.
"We have a ton of respect for UMKC," said Utah Valley head coach
Brent Anderson. "They came in playing great soccer and we knew this would be a big challenge for us today. We asked our players to really get focused and come prepared to play and they did that today."
The Wolverines improve to 12-5-2 overall and 7-2-0 in WAC play, while UMKC falls to 10-4-3 overall and 6-1-1 in conference play. The 12 victories ties the school record for wins in a single season. The 2011 UVU team also had 12 wins.
The shutout also marks Utah Valley's ninth clean sheet of the season, which is also a school record.
Jessica Duffin has recorded each of the nine shutouts in goal for the Wolverines this season.
Weber gave the Wolverines an early 1-0 lead as headed a
McKell Salmon corner kick into the right side of the net for the score. The goal marks Weber's first career collegiate goal.
Smith secured the win for Utah Valley with a goal in the 36
th minute.
Kalli Suesue sent a free kick to the top of the box, where
Sydney Fitzpatrick one-touched the ball to Smith, who drilled a shot from 18 yards out to the right side of the net for the goal.
Utah Valley out-shot UMKC 11-7, including a 5-1 advantage on shots on goal.
Kasandra Anderson,
Taylor Kirk,
Jamie Brown and Smith led the Wolverines with two shots each on the day.
"Our forwards and midfielders really did a good job of pressuring the ball," Anderson said. "Our backline was really organized and it limited UMKC's shots. It was a great defensive effort by our backline. It was fun to see two of our freshmen score those goals today. They are the future of this program and it was great to watch."
The Wolverines now rank second in the WAC standings with 21 points and sit just one point behind Seattle U (22). UVU will host Seattle U in its final regular season match of the season on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 12 p.m. MT.
