Bakersfield, Calif.—The Utah Valley University women's soccer team scored an early first half goal and then added another in the second period to defeat Bakersfield 2-1 Friday night at Main Soccer Field.

The Wolverines improve to 6-4-2 overall and even their WAC record at 1-1-0 with the win. Bakersfield falls to 1-9-1 overall and 0-1-0 in league play.

It took Utah Valley just 47 seconds to score its first goal of the match when sophomore defender
Melanie Ostler sent a long pass to senior forward
McKell Salmon, who put the ball in the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Ostler was credited with her third assist of the year with the on-target pass.

Bakersfield evened up the game in the 30
th minute when Taylor Wheeler converted a five-yard pass to Hedda Regefalk, who tied the match with a shot to the back of the net.

Junior midfielder
Jamie Brown scored the game winner in the 55
th minute after she received a long cross through the Bakersfield defense from sophomore defender Kallie Suesue. Brown then collected the ball and sent the go-ahead score into the net for her second goal of the season.

Bakersfield nearly tied the game with just 2:30 remaining in the contest when Jess Moorehead sent a shot inside the 18 that would have scored, but UVU junior keeper
Jessica Duffin made an impressive save to secure the Wolverine win.

Utah Valley out-shot Bakersfield 9-8 on the night with a 5-3 shots on goal advantage. Ostler and Brown led UVU with two shots each. Duffin recorded the win in goal with two saves on the night.

Utah Valley will continue WAC road play at Grand Canyon (1-7-1, 0-1-0) on Sunday at 2 p.m. MT.
