Maiden season ends in WAC quarterfinal

SEATTLE – Utah Valley University saw its inaugural men's soccer season come to an end in the quarterfinals of the 2014 WAC Tournament following a 1-0 loss to Bakersfield on Thursday night on Championship Field.

The Wolverines finish the season with a 9-7-2 record while the Roadrunners move to 10-7-3 and advace to the semifinals to face Seattle University on Friday night.

"That first half it took us awhile to get established into the game," said UVU head coach Greg Maas. "Really, it was a tale of two halves. Bakersfield was very good in the first half and we flipped that around in the second half and threw everything we had at it. We just couldn't get that extra touch or bounce."

Julian Zamora scored the game's lone goal – in the 12th minute – and Bakersfield was able to hold off Utah Valley the rest of the way.

"I told the guys after the game how proud I was of them and how great of a season it actually was. We'll have an opportunity to look back and reflect and continue to grow as a team from this point forward," Maas said.

It was a maiden season that has had its fair share of triumphs, beginning with the program's first ever match, a 5-1 win at home over Massachusetts on NSCAA TV. The team also defeated Gonzaga, 2-0, in front of 3,209 fans and a week later dispatched of then-No. 21 Denver, 2-1. Over 14,000 fans witnessed history at Clyde Field over the course of the home season, a number that ranks near the nation's leaders in both overall and average attendance.

The Utah Valley defense surrendered just 14 total goals all season and allowed two goals in a game just once all year – in a 2-1 double-overtime contest against then-No. 4 UC Irvine. All seven of the Wolverines' losses this season came by a single goal.

UVU is poised to return nearly its entire roster next season, with Cameron Kidwell as the program's lone senior in 2014. Utah Valley had 23 freshmen on its roster this year, seven of whom started on Thursday.
