OREM, Utah – A berth in next week's 2014 WAC Tournament is on the line this week as Utah Valley University men's soccer wraps up the regular season with road games at Bakersfield and San José State. Friday, UVU will face CSUB with a 7 p.m. PT/8 p.m. MT start before Sunday's regular season finale at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT against SJSU.
The Wolverines (7-6-2, 3-3-2) can clinch a spot in the tournament with one win or an Air Force loss and/or a tie in each team's final two contests. A UVU win over Bakersfield would also secure no worse than the No. 5 seed for Utah Valley. Mathematically, the Wolverines, who currently have 11 points, could still finish as high as No. 2 but would need help in several other areas.
Â
"It's a tight table and this weekend's matches will determine final qualification for the WAC Championships in Seattle next week," said UVU coach
Greg Maas. "The boys are focused, peaking at the right time, and are very determined to finish our first regular season in fine form."Â
Â
UVU is coming off of a 3-0 shutout of Houston Baptist in the home finale on Sunday at Clyde Field.
Chandler Boyd,
Lucas Cawley and
Karson Payton all scored goals for the Wolverines. For Boyd, it was his first goal of the season and marked the first time since the season opener against UMass that Utah Valley scored a first-half goal. The shutout of HBU moved the Wolverines' goals against average to just 0.76, which leads the WAC and ranks 25
th in the country. Utah Valley also drew with Incarnate Word, 1-1, last Friday.
Bakersfield enters Friday's match at 9-6-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the WAC and is one point behind UVU with 10 points on the year. Redshirt freshman Julian Zamora leads the WAC with 21 points and 10 goals on the season. The Roadrunners currently sit in the No. 6 spot in terms of tournament seeding, three points in front of Air Force.
San José State hosts Seattle University on Friday and currently has 14 points, which is fourth in the WAC standings. The Spartans are 6-8-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the WAC and are unbeaten in their last three matches. SJSU is still mathematically alive for the regular season title, needing two wins, a UNLV loss and at least a loss each for both Seattle and Incarnate Word. The Spartans could be seeded anywhere from No. 1 to No. 5. Several other positioning scenarios also exist, making it a potential wild final weekend in the WAC.
The WAC Tournament begins with two quarterfinal matches on Nov. 13. The semifinal games will take place on Nov. 14 with the championship match on Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. PT.
