Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Utah Valley University's upset bid of No. 4 UC Irvine was thwarted in a 2-1 double-overtime loss on Sunday at the UNLV Rebel Classic.
It was the final non-conference game of the season for the Wolverines (4-3-0), who will now open their first Western Athletic Conference season on Saturday at home against defending regular season and tournament champion Seattle University.
"I couldn't be more proud of the way we played and approached this match," said head coach
Greg Maas. "We came into it tactically understanding how Irvine plays. We executed throughout the match and gave ourselves many chances and dominated many aspects of the game."
UVU got a 52nd-minute goal from
Matt Gay, his fifth of the year and second of the weekend, on a penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead.
Skyler Milne took the ball into the box and was grabbed by the UC Irvine defender, resulting in the PK.
The Wolverine lead held for nearly 30 minutes before Gor Kirakosyan got the equalizer in the 80th minute. After the first overtime went scoreless, Eduardo Calzada picked up the game-winner 2:05 into the second extra frame, in the 103rd minute, for the Anteaters (8-0-1).
The teams played to a scoreless first half, the sixth straight for UVU in which neither team scored in the game's first 45 minutes.
"We were able to gain a lot out of our non-conference schedule. We had great wins at home in front of our crowd and this was our first overtime match, which helps us moving forward," Maas said.
Saturday's match against Seattle kicks off at 7 p.m. MT from Clyde Field, where Utah Valley ranks among the national leaders in average attendance at over 2,700 per game.
