Wolverines Edged, 1-0, at DePaul

Box Score CHICAGO – After a convincing win at home in its inaugural match last week, the Utah Valley University men's soccer team will now look to regroup after suffering its first defeat, 1-0, at DePaul University on Saturday.

The first road contest for the Wolverines (1-1-0), the match was originally scheduled for Friday afternoon but several storms and lightning in the Windy City forced the teams off the field multiple times during warm ups before it was postponed until Saturday morning.

"We knew DePaul was a difficult opponent. They were very organized and disciplined behind the ball," said UVU head coach Greg Maas. "We still created some good chances but our inexperience showed in some areas. The mistakes we made are fixable however and it's a matter of some tactical awareness and timing decisions that we can improve on."

Simon Megally scored the game's only goal for the Blue Demons (2-1-0) in the 64th minute when his free kick deflected off the cross bar in the upper left corner. The Wolverines made several last-ditch efforts to pick up the equalizer but a last second free kick was cleared as time expired.

The match featured 40 combined fouls and six yellow cards; UVU was whistled 21 times to 19 for DePaul with both teams carded three times each. DePaul's Wish Field was also Utah Valley's first foray competing on turf as opposed to natural grass it has at home on Clyde Field.

"There were a lot fouls on both sides and it was disruptive to the tempo and rhythm of the game we were trying to establish," Maas said. "The turf playing surface and tight dimensions were equally challenging for us to settle the game down. That said, that's why we play these games in difficult environments and our experience as a team will improve with each match we play."

UVU has a quick turnaround and will face Loyola Chicago at Northwestern University on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT/1 p.m. MT. The Ramblers defeated Western Michigan, 1-0, on Friday are 2-0 so far on the season. The Wolverines return home next Friday at 7:30 p.m. MT against Gonzaga to cap off Homecoming Week.
