OREM, Utah—The Utah Valley University women's basketball team will welcome New Mexico State to the UCCU Center on Saturday Jan. 24 for their annual Pink game to honor breast cancer awareness at 3 p.m. MT.
"We are excited to be a part of the national goal of bringing awareness to breast cancer. That goal is personally important to me, my high school coach died of breast cancer, as a mentor she was very important to me," head coach
Cathy Nixon said. "Our current athlete
Rhaiah Spooner-Knight, her mother, Megan Spooner, is currently battling breast cancer and we will have the opportunity to recognize her during the game, as well as a former player of mine, Mandy Ney Fuhriman, which is a great honor."
The Pink game is a tradition at UVU to raise awareness for breast cancer. Fans wearing pink to the game will be granted free admission and in addition, 200 pink shirts will be given away to the first 200 attendents.
"New Mexico State is a good team with personnel that will be challenging for us to guard," head coach
Cathy Nixon said. "They are leading the WAC in turnovers forced, and they are a team that pressures full court. But we have been defending well, hopefully we can manage their pressure and be able to put some points on the board."
Utah Valley enters the contest following a 59-52 defeat from Texas-Pan American at home on Thursday evening. Spooner-Knight led the Wolverines with 14 points while
Karlee Norris tied her career high with 14 rebounds.
The Aggies come into the game with a 74-62 win against Grand Canyon in Phoenix on Thursday, Jan. 22. Shanice Davis led New Mexico State with 24 points while teammate Brianna Freeman added 15 and Moriah Mack finished with 12. Freeman also finished with nine rebounds.
The Wolverines and the Aggies have split the series 2-2, with Utah Valley claiming the last win 87-81 in Las Cruces, N.M. on Feb. 27, 2014.
