Live VideoOREM, Utah—The Utah Valley University women's basketball team looks for their first road win in Cedar City for a rematch against Southern Utah on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Centrum Arena, their final game before WAC play beginning on Jan. 10.
Â
Utah Valley (6-8) saw SUU (7-4, 1-1 Big Sky) for the first time this season on Dec. 2 at the UCCU Center, where the Wolverines fell to the Thunderbirds in a tight 76-72 loss. This will the 17th game all-time between UVU and Southern Utah with the T-birds leading the series 12-4, winning the last nine match-ups. Utah Valley's last win against SUU came on Nov. 18, 2009 (68-54).
Â
"This is our first second-chance opponent, so this is an opportunity for us to make some adjustments. Both teams will be making adjustments and it's good for us to practice that process, since we will need to be good at that in conference play," head coach
Cathy Nixon said. "This is a chance for us to go on the road and get some momentum and confidence before we open up the WAC at Seattle on Saturday."
Â
Southern Utah began Big Sky Conference play last week and split their contests, taking home a victory over Portland State 86-74, and then being defeated by Sacramento State 69-67.
Â
Utah Valley enters the contest after a victory against Omaha 59-57 at home on Dec. 29, where freshman
Mariah Seals scored the game-winning layup with 1.9 seconds left.
Â
With 20 seconds remaining, Seals ran down the clock until the final moments when she split two defenders and converted the left-handed layup in the Wolverines' first game back following a short Christmas break.
Â
Through 14 games this season,
Rhaiah Spooner-Knight leads the Wolverines with 14.6 points per game, with Seals right behind with 12.4.
Karlee Norris leads the Wolverines on the boards with 8.4 while Seals also leads in steals with 19.
Â
SUU is coached by former UVU assistant coach Chris Boettcher. Boettcher was Nixon's assistant for eight seasons before a stint at BYU and one season coaching a men's professional team in Japan.
