OREM, Utah—Freshman forward
Breanna McCarter and senior midfielder
Jamie Brown each put shots in the back of the net to lead the Utah Valley University women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Sunday at Clyde Field.
Â
The win moves Utah Valley's record to 9-4-1 overall and 4-0-1 in WAC play, which keeps the Wolverines atop the league standings. UTRGV falls to 2-9-3 overall and 0-5-1 in league play. The win also moves UVU's record at home to an unbeaten 7-0-1.
Â
"It was a good match today," said Utah Valley head coach
Brent Anderson. "I thought the team's energy level was a little bit low. The first half wasn't a very clean half for us. I loved that Bree (McCarter) was able to create a goal on her own. That was a great solo goal for her. The second half was a bit cleaner. We moved the ball around a little better and kept possession longer. We didn't create a lot of scoring opportunities but its good to see Jamie (Brown) get back on the ball and get a goal. We love being where we are at right now, on top of the conference standings, but we know we have a lot of work to do. We've got some great games ahead of us against some very good teams so we are going to have to be much sharper going forward."
Â
McCarter scored the unassisted game winner in the 41st minute after finding a loose ball and one-touching it past a defender before firing a shot from the top of the box into the upper right 90. The score is the first of McCarter's career.
Â
Brown connected on her fifth goal of the season in the 80th minute after receiving a cross in the middle of the box from
Sheridan Fox on the right side. Brown sent her shot toward the far post to secure the 2-0 UVU victory.Â
Â
Utah Valley controlled the match, out-shooting the Vaqueros 12-1, including a 3-0 advantage on goal.
Libby Weber and Brown led the Wolverines with three shots each on the day. Fox, Brown and McCarter each tallied a shot on goal.
Â
Senior keeper
Jessica Duffin picks up her sixth shutout of the season in the box. The clean sheet marks her 15th career shutouts, adding to her already UVU career shutout record.
Â
The Wolverines will continue play at home on Friday against Grand Canyon at 5 p.m. MT. The match will be the front end of a double-header with the UVU men's team, which will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. MT that night.
