PHOENIX, Ariz.—The Utah Valley University women's soccer team suffered its first conference loss of the season in a 1-0 setback to Grand Canyon Friday evening at GCU Soccer Field in Phoenix, Ariz.
Â
The defeat snaps Utah Valley's eight-game unbeaten streak. Prior to Friday night, UVU's last loss was a 1-0 setback at UTEP on Sept. 18. The Wolverines fall to 11-5-1 overall and 6-1-1 in conference play.
Â
"We started the game slowly today and it took us too long to recover from that," said Utah Valley head coach
Brent Anderson. "The team regrouped well at halftime and showed a lot of character to create some excellent scoring opportunities but couldn't find the equalizer. The good thing is we are fired up and ready to compete on Sunday."
Â
Grand Canyon (7-8-2, 4-3-1) put in the game-winning goal in the 19th minute after Madison Cox headed in a free kick from McKenzie Cook. The score is Cox's third goal of the season.
Â
Utah Valley out-shot the 'Lopes 15-7, including a 12-3 advantage in the second period. The Wolverines recorded nine shots on goal compared to GCU's five.
Jamie Brown led UVU with three shots, including two on goal.
Kasandra Anderson had two shots, both on goal.
Â
The Wolverines continue road play at CSU Bakersfield on Sunday. The match will kickoff at 11 a.m. PT/12 p.m. MT and will be broadcast live on the WAC Digital Network.
