EDINBURG, Texas – Paul Hoffmeister's 56th-minute goal helped No. 23 Utah Valley University to a 1-0 shutout at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Friday night.
The Wolverines move to 10-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the WAC, with the 10 wins already surpassing 2014's nine-win inaugural season.
"I am very proud of our performance tonight. We were patient, disciplined, and our maturity determined the outcome of that match," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "We will enjoy our 10th win as a team tonight, but our preparation for a good HBU team will begin in the morning."
After 55 scoreless minutes, Hoffmeister scored his fourth goal of the season, tying him for the team high. It's also his second goal in as many matches.
Derek Wilcox notched his second straight clean sheet, his third of the year, and the team's sixth overall. He had one save, a diving stop that preserved shutout in the 58th minute.
Utah Valley finished with 18 shots, 10 on goal, while the Vaqueros (4-6-1, 1-2-0) had just four shots with the one on goal.
UTRGV goalkeeper Leo Castillo, the reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Week, had nine saves for the Vaqueros, a team in its first season of men's soccer.
The Wolverines now head to Houston Baptist for a 1 p.m. CT/noon MT matchup with the Huskies on Sunday. HBU upset No. 19 Seattle U in WAC play on Friday night, 3-1.
