OREM, Utah—The Utah Valley University men's basketball team returns to the UCCU Center Saturday night to take on San Diego Christian in the team's final non-conference matchup of the season. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. MT.
Â
Utah Valley heads into Saturday's game against the Hawks with a 5-9 overall record. The Wolverines look to snap a three-game skid after dropping games against UNC Wilmington, No. 16 Louisville and Saint Mary's.
Â
The Wolverines most recently wrapped up a five-game road stretch with a 65-60 setback against Saint Mary's on Monday night at McKeon Pavilion.
Jaden Jackson scored a team-high 16 points to lead UVU in the loss. Jackson tallied his 16 points on a 6-of-13 shooting performance. The senior guard knocked down 2-of-3 shots from long range and hit 2-of-2 shots at the free throw line. He also dished out three assists and pulled down one rebound in 35 minutes of play.
Marcel Davis and
Konner Frey each helped with nine points each on the night.
Alex Carr led UVU on the boards with seven rebounds to go along with six points, one assist and a block.
Â
Frey continues to lead Utah Valley in both scoring and rebounding at 14.9 points and 7.1 rebounds a contest.
Jaden Jackson and
Marcel Davis also average double figures at 12.7 and 12.1 points per game, respectively. Davis leads the team in assists at 4.21 a game, while junior center
Andrew Bastien leas the Wolverines in blocks at 2.30 a contest.
Â
San Diego Christian College heads into Saturday's meeting against the Wolverines with 7-5 overall record. The Hawks are an NAIA team from Santee, California that is located just outside of San Diego. SDC has played four games against NCAA Division I opponents and a single game against an NCAA Division II foe, but those games do not count against SDC's record as they count as exhibition contests for the Hawks.
Â
The Hawks most recently went 1-1 at the Master's College tournament in Santa Clara, Calif. The team opened the tournament with a 75-70 win over John Brown University before falling 81-54 to Central Methodist. Senior forward Trevor English led the Hawks to the win over John Brown with a game-high 24 points. Senior guard Dalante Dunklin helped with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Dunklin had 18 points, while English posted 10 in Wednesday's setback to Central Methodist. Dunklin leads the team in both scoring and rebounding at 18.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. English also averages double figure scoring at 15.4 points a contest.Â
Â
SDC is coached by Edgar Mendez, who is in his second season with the team. Mendez is a former head coach in the Mexican Professional league. He has also had stints as an assistant coach at Scripps Ranch High School, Cuyamaca junior college, El Cajon Valley and Crawford High School.
Monday's meeting with the Hawks marks the first-ever matchup between the two schools. Utah Valley holds an all-time perfect 49-0 record against non Division I teams.
Â
Saturday's game at the UCCU Center will tip-off at 7 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast live on ESN 960 AM radio with Jim McCulloch handling the play-by-play duties.
