OREM, Utah—
Jaden Jackson scored a career-high 23 points and
Konner Frey added a 22-point , 10-rebound double-double to lead the Utah Valley University men's basketball team to an 84-81 double-overtime win over in-state rival Weber State Wednesday night at the UCCU Center.
Â
Trailing by two points, 77-75, with 1:03 to play in the second overtime, Jackson hit a shot from beyond the arc to give the Wolverines a 78-77 lead. UVU then made a stop on defense and went a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line over the final 40 seconds to secure the win.
Â
The Wolverines (3-6) overcame an eight-point deficit with 2:20 remaining in regulation to tie the game and send it to overtime. The team then overcame a seven-point disadvantage with 1:21 left to play in the first overtime to tie the game and send it into the second extra period.
Â
"Weber State is a great team," said Utah Valley head coach
Mark Pope. "They'll compete and probably win their conference this year. They have a couple of future pros. They are incredibly well coached. We had a ton of guts and togetherness and we caught some breaks. I'm old and I've been in basketball for a long time as a player and a coach and this ranks right up there as one of my favorite wins of all time because our guys showed so much courage and guts in so many ways. I couldn't be prouder of them."
Â
Jackson scored his 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field, including a 4-of-7 clip from long range. The senior guard knocked down a three-point field goal in the final minute of regulation and in each overtime period to help secure the win.
Â
Frey tallied his second double-double of the season with his 22 points and 10 boards. The junior forward went a perfect 12-of-12 from the charity stripe on the night and knocked down four free throws in the final 25 seconds of the second overtime.
Â
Marcel Davis recorded his fifth double digit scoring game of the season with 16 points. He also pulled down five rebounds, dished out three assists and registered three steals.
Â
Andrew Bastien, who recorded seven blocks in Saturday's game against Southern Utah, picked up four more against Wildcats. He also pulled down six rebounds.
Hayden Schenck nearly had a double-double with seven points and nine rebounds.
Â
Utah Valley hit 37 percent (27-of-73) of its shots from the field while Weber State shot 33 percent (25-of-75). The Wolverines had 13 turnovers on the night while forcing the Wildcats into 19.Â
Â
