Wolverines head to Phoenix for Grand Canyon matchup

OREM, Utah—The Utah Valley University women's basketball team continues WAC play as they travel to Phoenix in their second match-up against Grand Canyon Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. MT in the GCU Arena.

Utah Valley (9-14, 3-5 WAC) is 2-3 all time against Grand Canyon University after winning their last contest 52-50 in Orem on Jan. 17.  The Wolverines are on a two game winning streak with great defensive efforts against Seattle U 73-42 on Feb. 7, and Bakersfield 70-58 on Feb. 5.

"Grand Canyon really shoots the ball well, it will be a test for us defensively. They have athletes that can score multiple ways and they have a full lineup of players that can shoot the three," head coach Cathy Nixon said. "It will be a test of our individual defense and our team defense, and more than anything, it will test our sense of urgency, defensively. When we have urgency on the defensive end, we are competitive, and if we don't have it, we're not competitive, no matter who we are playing. Hopefully we can bring that on Saturday against Grand Canyon and score some points ourselves."

The Wolverines are led by sophomore Rhaiah Spooner-Knight with 13.5 points per game while teammate Mariah Seals is right behind with 10.9.  Karlee Norris leads on the boards with a 7.2 average.  In WAC play Spooner-Knight leads with 12.0 points per game, and junior Sam Loggins leads on the boards with 5.6.

Grand Canyon (9-12, 3-5 WAC) enters the contest after dropping their last two home games to WAC preseason favorite CSU Bakersfield 65-60, and Seattle U 59-56. The Lopes are led by Jessica Gajewski averaging 11.5 points per game and 2.2 three pointers per contest.  Cheyenne Hedrington leads on the boards with 7.1 per game.
