OREM, Utah--
Jaylen Watson hit a pair of home runs to lead the Utah Valley softball team in a 10-5 setback in game two of a double-header against Weber State Wednesday at Wolverine Field.
Â
Utah Valley got off to a quick lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning on back-to-back home runs by
Brianna Gatlin and Watson. Gatlin hit a two-run shot over the centerfield fence that scored
Breezy Roth. Watson then hit a solo shot to put the Wolverines up 3-0.
Â
Weber State answered with four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 4-3 advantage. The Wolverines countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as Watson hit her second home run of the game with a two-run blast that scored Gatlin.
Â
The Wildcats scored three runs in the top of the fourth to retake the lead, 7-5. After a scoreless fifth and sixth inning, Weber State scored a run with a bases loaded walk and then drove in a pair of runs with bases loaded to take a 10-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Â
The Wolverines had four hits in the game, two each from Gatlin and Watson. Gatlin went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs. Watson also went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.
Â
"We kind of let them sneak back in there," said Utah Valley head coach
Nikki Palmer. "They are a really good ball club and we knew that coming into it. We knew they were going to hit and they were going to play well. We had two top performing hitters, but other than that we were quiet, which is uncharacteristic of us. We just need to perform a little better."
Â
Bailey Seek picked up the win in the circle for Weber State as she improves to 7-2 on the season. Kirtlyn Bohling, who picked up the win for the Wildcats in the game one of the double-header, earned the save in game two.
Â
Utah Valley will continue play at Wolverine Field on Thursday as the Wolverines welcome Oklahoma State for a double-header. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. MT. A live video stream will be available on WolverineGreen.com.
Â
"We're excited to get a Big 12 school in here," said Palmer. "Oklahoma State is a great program. We usually play up for those kind of teams. We're excited to get them in here and have a couple of big games."
