POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State scored nine late runs en route to a 10-2 non-conference victory over Utah Valley University at ISU's Miller Ranch Stadium in Pocatello on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The contest concluded a five-game road stretch for the Wolverines (16-33), as UVU will now return home to welcome Missouri-Kansas City to town for its final home and conference series of the season this weekend.
Â
Utah Valley was the first to get on the board in the ballgame as it pushed across a first-inning run to take a 1-0 advantage.
Megan Peay started the rally with a one-out single and
Jaylen Watson and
Taleigh Williams followed with a walk and single, respectively, to load the bases.
Erin Romero then brought home Peay by drawing a bases-loaded walk.
Â
The Bengals (29-14) then evened the score at 1-1 in the last of the second on a solo home run from Dara Kolar. UVU later regained the lead at 2-1 thanks to an RBI triple to left from
Morgan Smith in the top of the fourth. The lead was short-lived, however, as ISU countered with four runs in the bottom of the frame.
Â
The Bengals then put the game away in the fifth by scoring five runs on five hits to win by the eight-run rule.
Â
Kailey Christensen started for the Wolverines and pitched well in the early stages as she gave up just one hit in 3.1 innings. The junior right-hander was tagged with the loss, however, as she issued four free passes in the fourth inning and five runs in all (three earned) to drop to 1-7 on the year. ISU's Sophie Slagle went the distance in the circle for the Bengals to improve to 14-6 on the year.
Â
Smith led the Wolverines at the plate in the contest by going 1-for-3 with a stolen base, a run driven home and a run scored. With her fourth-inning triple, the junior speedster tied the Utah Valley program record for career triples with nine.
Â
Sarah Hayes paced the Bengal offense on the day by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Â
The contest marked the lone meeting on the season between UVU and ISU.
Â
This weekend's Western Athletic Conference showdown will pit the sixth-place Wolverines against the fourth-place Kangaroos. The two will play a single game on Friday (April 24) at 2 p.m., as well as a doubleheader on Saturday (April 25) beginning at noon. Three UVU seniors will be honored as part of Senior Day prior to Saturday's first pitch.
