Box Score AMHERST, Massachusetts – Austin Buxton's golden goal sent Utah Valley University to a 1-0 win in overtime in the season opener at UMass on Friday at Rudd Field.
Buxton put back a shot by
Karson Payton, stunning the Minutemen (0-1-0) just 46 seconds prior to the end of the first overtime period. The win in extra time is the Wolverines' (1-0-0) first after going 0-2-2 in four OT contests last year.
"Credit to UMass. They were very well coached and organized defensively," UVU coach
Greg Maas said. "I couldn't be more proud of our boys. They maintained their composure throughout and earned our program's first win in OT. We'll enjoy the moment and we look forward to our match with UMass-Lowell on Sunday."
For Buxton, it's career goal number two after he also scored in the season-opener – and inaugural match for the program – last August, also against UMass.
UVU finished with 22 shots, five on goal, while limiting the Minutemen to just eight shots, one on goal. The blank slate for
Collin Partee is the sophomore goalkeeper's third career shutout. Payton's assist is the sixth of his career after a team-high five in 2014.
UVU continues its season-opening two-game trip on Sunday at noon ET/10 a.m. MT at UMass-Lowell.
