Five Wolverines score en route to 5-1 win over ISU

Orem, Utah — Five different scorers led the Utah Valley University women's soccer team to a 5-1 victory over Idaho State on Thursday night at Clyde Field.

"When we step on the field like we did tonight, we can be very dangerous," head coach Brent Anderson said. "When you have five different players with goals, you can create opportunities to score and have a complete performance, which is what we did tonight."

Taylor Kirk kicked off the Wolverine (4-3-0) spurt with her first goal of the year in the fifth minute. Kasandra Anderson dribbled the ball into the box and set up Kirk for a left-footer, which hit the crossbar before skirting passed the Bengals' goalkeeper for a 1-0 advantage.

Utah Valley later extended its lead to 2-0 in the 17th minute. The goal came courtesy of Sheridan Fox, her fifth of the season. Fox received the ball on a cross from Sydney Fitzpatrick and delivered it passed the diving goalkeeper into the center of the goal.

The Wolverines scored their third goal of the night, when sophomore Sara Callister's shot bounced off the goalkeeper and teammate Tori Smith rebounded and scored before the Bengal keeper could recover.

UVU continued on with its fourth goal of the opening half when Rylee Gritton connected on a pass from Callister deep in the box to find Gritton for the score.

The match marks the fourth time this season the Wolverines have scored more than three goals in the opening half. This was also the first time since Oct. 29, 2011 that UVU has notched four goals in a half.

Idaho State (1-5-1) scored its lone goal of the night in the 53rd minute when Samantha Rodriquez outran UVU defenders, and placed a shot in the right corner for her second goal of the season.

The Wolverines capped their scoring in the 71st minute with a deep left-footed goal by senior Jamie Brown, her fourth goal of the season, on an assist from Abby Jameson.

Redshirt freshman Sarah Davis recorded her first collegiate save in goal for the Wolverines late in the contest, as she came on to spell senior Jessica Duffin for the final 20 minutes.

Up next, the Wolverines will head on the road for a single match at UTEP on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. MT. Following the contest, UVU will return to Clyde Field to take on Portland State on Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. MT.
