EL PASO, Texas—A Utah Valley foul in the box gave UTEP a penalty kick and the Miners capitalized by putting the ball in the back of the net in the 50th minute to secure a 1-0 win over the Utah Valley women's soccer team Friday evening at University Field.
With the loss, Utah Valley falls to 4-4-0 on the year, while UTEP improves to 7-3-0 on the season.
"It took us some time to settle down but I thought that once they did it turned into a very good match," said Utah Valley head coach
Brent Anderson. "UTEP was dangerous all night and specifically on set pieces, but our team played very well defensively and remained organized for the full 90 minutes."
Jessica Duffin recorded four saves in the setback. The senior keeper had actually stopped UTEP's penalty kick but the official cited her for leaving early and the Miners took advantage of the second opportunity with the score.
Freshman forward
Breanna McCarter led the Wolverines with two shots on goal. Junior defender
Kalli Suesue also registered a shot on goal. Utah Valley recorded 12 shots on the night, including the three on goal. UTEP had 14 shots with five on goal.
"I loved the team's attitude tonight," said Anderson. "Without a couple of unfortunate calls, that game could have gone either way. I like the way we are playing right now and I think we can build off the positive experiences from tonight."
Utah Valley now looks to keep its perfect 4-0-0 home record alive as the Wolverines return to Clyde Field on Sunday to take on Portland State (2-5-0). Kick-off is set for 11 a.m. MT.
