OREM, Utah—Senior forward
Kali Stubbs hit a shot into the upper right side of the net from 22 yards out in the 90th minute to secure a 1-0 shutout win over Portland State in UVU's final non-conference match of the season Sunday at Clyde Field.
Utah Valley improves to 5-4-0 overall on the season and remains perfect at home with a 5-0-0 mark. Portland State falls to 2-6-0 on the season.
"Portland State is a very good team," said Anderson. "We knew that they would be organized defensively. It was a 1-0 game at their place last year and we had a hard time breaking them down so we knew we would have to be a bit more creative in the attack and play the ball wider. When we were able to do that, we created the opportunities we needed to come away with the win."
With just 35 seconds remaining in the game, freshman forward
Angie Timm stole the ball from Portland State at the top of the box on the UVU side of the field. Stubbs then picked it up and fired a shot past the PSU keeper for the game-winning score.
The goal is the first of the season for Stubbs, who was playing just her second match of the season after being sidelined by injury. The score marks the 13th goal of her career, which puts her in a tie for eighth on the all-time UVU goals list.
Senior keeper
Jessica Duffin registered six saves to pick up the shutout in goal for the Wolverines. The shutout marks Duffin's 12th career clean sheet, moving her past Lauren Slack (2009-13) for the top spot on the all-time UVU career shutouts list.
"The record feels great but it's a team accomplishment," said Duffin. "A lot of credit goes to the defense because they keep things organized, but the record feels good and it's a big accomplishment."
Senior midfielder
Jamie Brown, sophomore midfielder
Libby Weber and sophomore forward
Tori Smith led the Wolverines with three shots each. Brown fronted the team with two shots on goal. As a team, UVU tallied 18 shots on the day, including six on goal. UVU held Portland State to seven shots, including six on goal.
Utah Valley will continue play at Clyde Field as the Wolverines open WAC play against defending champion Seattle U on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. MT.
