WOLVERINES HIT ROAD TO FACE UNLV, SUUThe Utah Valley University women's soccer team hits he road this weekend for two matches, beginning with UNLV on Friday Sept. 4, at 4:30 p.m. PT/5:30 p.m. MT. The Wolverines (3-1-0) then travel to play in-state rival Southern Utah on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. MT.
UVU enters this weekend's action as winners of three straight during a three-game homestand that was capped with a 6-2 win over Montana on Sunday.
"We had a good week of practice and are prepared to hit the road. It's key for us to take the success we've had at home and see that translate on the road and this weekend provides a very good test for us," head coach
Brent Anderson said.
UVU won a pair of home matches last weekend, starting with a 1-0 victory over in-state foe Utah State last Friday in front of a record crowd of 2,790 fans. Senior goalkeeper
Jessica Duffin recorded her second shutout of the year and the 11th of her career. The Wolverine goal came on a header from
Tori Smith on a free kick from
Melanie Ostler in the 81st minute.
Two days later, the six goal output against Montana marked the first time UVU scored six goals in a match since the 2010 season.
Sheridan Fox scored two goals and had an assist on her way to earning the WAC Offensive Player of the Week award. Duffin's shutout over USU earned her the defensive award, giving Utah Valley a sweep of the WAC's weekly honors.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITIONUNLV (2-2-0) is coming off of a 1-0 overtime win at Northern Arizona on Sunday after falling at No. 22 Arizona State on Friday, 6-0. The Rebels, out of the Mountain West Conference, have had junior Susie Bernal score both of the team's goals so far this season. UNLV holds a 2-1 series advantage all-time with UVU winning the most recent meeting, 1-0, last season in Orem on an overtime goal from
Tori Smith.
Southern Utah (1-3-0) will play at Dixie State on Thursday night in St. George before hosting the Wolverines on Sunday. The Thunderbirds dropped contests last weekend at Cal State Northridge (2-0), and UC Riverside (4-2). Sunday marks the 11th meeting between the in-state foes, with UVU holding a 6-1-3 record against SUU.
UP NEXTFollowing this weekends matches, the Wolverines will return home to host Idaho State on Thursday, Sept. 10, 7:30 p.m. MT in the team's only contest of the week.
