USAFA, Colo. – Paul Hoffmeister recorded his third brace of the season as Utah Valley University picked up a big WAC road win at Air Force, 2-0, on Friday night at Cadet Soccer Field.
Â
The Wolverines (10-3-0, 3-1-0) are ranked No. 21 by TopDrawerSoccer.com and No. 23 by College Soccer News while the Falcons (9-4-0, 3-1-0) are No. 29 in the College Soccer News Top 30 poll.
Â
"It was a fantastic result for the boys tonight against a very disciplined and talented Air Force side," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "It was a complete performance from front to back, and
Paul Hoffmeister scored two goals with pure class."
Â
Hoffmeister scored in the 27th minute and then gave UVU an insurance goal in the 77th minute to help the Wolverines move into second place – into a tie with Air Force – in the WAC standings.
Â
The first goal came following an Air Force goal kick that was headed by
Skyler Milne just inside the midfield line and directed to Hoffmeister, who beat two defenders and scored with his left foot into the lower right corner.
Â
The second goal came in the 77th minute and was into the lower right corner and came when the junior midfielder again beat two defenders off of a
Giovanny Vazquez free kick just past midfield.
Â
Mitch Jensen, the reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Week, had two saves to record his third straight – and the team's eighth – shutout of the season.
Â
Hoffmeister's prior two-goal performances came in the season-opener in a 2-1 win over No. 20 Washington and in a 4-2 victory against Evansville.
Â
"We'll enjoy this tonight, but our focus will quickly change as we prepare for a motivated UMKC," Maas said.
Â
Utah Valley now travels to Kansas City to face UMKC on Sunday at 7 p.m. CT/6 p.m. MT. The Kangaroos drew with league-leading Seattle U on Friday night. The Wolverines return home next Friday against Houston Baptist for a 7 p.m. kick at Clyde Field.
