WOLVERINES HOME FOR HOUSTON BAPTIST, TRAVEL TO SAN JOSE STATE
Back into the NSCAA Coaches Poll at No. 21, Utah Valley University begins the second half of Western Athletic Conference play by hosting Houston Baptist on Friday at 7 p.m. MT. The Wolverines (11-3-0, 4-1-0) then head to the Bay Area for a match at San José State on Sunday at noon PT/1 p.m. MT. Both HBU and SJSU are affiliate members of the WAC in men's soccer.
UVU is also up to No. 16 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll, No. 20 in the College Soccer News top 30 poll and No. 21 in the NCAA RPI. Three of the Wolverines' five remaining regular season games will be home games at Clyde Field, where the team is currently 5-0-0.
"Travel in the WAC is very difficult and this team relishes every match on Clyde Field in front of our 12th Wolverines," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "With only four or five matches remaining in conference play for everyone, each match will have tremendous implications in the race for the regulations season title and seeding for the tournament."
The Wolverines won two road games last week -- both by scores of 2-0 -- at Air Force and at UMKC. The two shutouts extended the team's streak to four straight wins via clean sheets with goalkeeper
Mitch Jensen securing his second consecutive WAC Defensive Player of the Week award. Utah Valley is tied for the national lead with nine shutouts overall, which is also a new single-season school record.
Jensen had two saves against Air Force, a team that entered the game second in the nation in scoring, and then followed that with a four-save outing at UMKC.
Paul Hoffmeister scored both goals in the win over Air Force for his third brace of the year. Hoffmeister was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Team of the Week on Tuesday.
Skyler Milne recorded his second brace in Sunday's win in Kansas City. He scored on a header following a free kick in the first half and then put the game away with a penalty kick in the second half. Meyer assisted on the first-half goal and is tied with teammate
Karson Payton -- and two others -- with a WAC-leading five assists on the year.
ABOUT THE HUSKIES
Houston Baptist (4-8-1, 2-4-0) is coming off of a 3-1 home win over UT Rio Grande Valley on Sunday. The win snapped a three-match losing streak behind the season-high three goals for the Huskies. HBU and UVU have split the first two games in the all-time series. The Wolverines won 3-0 in 2014 before the Huskies upset then-No. 23 UVU last season in Houston. Malik Key leads HBU with four goals and also has an assist for a team-high nine points.
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
San José State (2-11-2, 1-4-1) split two home games last week, defeating Houston Baptist 2-1 before a 4-1 loss to Incarnate Word. The Wolverines are 2-0-0 against SJSU, winning 1-2 on the road in 2014 and 3-2 last season in Orem. Milne had UVU's first-ever -- and only -- hat trick in the win for the Wolverines. Five different players have scored multiple goals for the Spartans, led by three from Jeremy Romero. The game at UVU is San José State's only game this week.
COMING UP
The Wolverines play twice at home next week, beginning Thursday Oct. 27 against Grand Canyon. UVU also hosts UNLV two days later, on Saturday, Oct. 29. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. MT.
