Wolverines extend win streak to school-record six

SAN JOSÉ, Calif. – Utah Valley University ran its win streak to a school record six games in a 2-1 victory at San José State on Sunday afternoon. Despite seeing its five-game shutout streak come to an end, the Wolverines (13-3-0, 6-1-0) picked up three key points in the WAC table and clinched a berth in the conference tournament.

Skyler Milne and Matt Gay each scored for UVU with Aaron Meyer assisting on both goals. Gay's game-winner was the sophomore's first goal of the season.

"We knew going into this match it was going to be a battle," said UVU head coach Greg Maas. "Limited rest and recovery, travel, and a challenging playing surface… but this team's focus and resolve proved the difference in the end."

The Wolverines struck first just over 10 minutes in on a free kick from 30 yards out. Meyer floated a pass into the box for Milne, whose header found the right corner of the goal for his seventh of the season.

The Spartans (2-12-2, 1-5-1) got the equalizer in the 27th minute. Leonardo Silva started it with a touch pass to Jonathan Colunga, who lead Rory Knibbs into the box. Knibbs just beat UVU goalkeeper Mitch Jensen to the ball and scored his second goal of the season, ending a streak of over 544 straight scoreless minutes for the Wolverines. It was first goal allowed by Jensen in over 566 shutout minutes in goal in the junior's first season of Division I soccer.

"College soccer is about winning games and to not concede a goal 544 minutes during this six game winning streak is a credit to each and every player on this team," Maas said.

Gay's game-winner came in the 42nd minute, with less than four minutes to go in the first half. A Jensen goal kick past midfield was headed towards the 18 by Meyer, where a San José State defender whiffed on the ball and Gay fired past the keeper for his first goal of the season.

Meyer's two assists give him seven on the season, which currently leads all WAC players. Jensen finished with three saves on the day in also picking up his first assist. Although the shutout streak ended at five, the Wolverines remain tied for the national lead with 10 shutouts on the season.

Utah Valley returns home for its final regular season home stand next week. The Wolverines host Grand Canyon on Thursday and UNLV on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m. MT with Saturday also serving as Senior Night. Three games remain in the WAC regular season with the conference tournament hosted by UVU and slated to begin on Nov. 10 at Clyde Field in Orem.
