UVU win seventh straight, clinches first-round bye

OREM, Utah – No. 14/21 Utah Valley University extended its school-record win streak to seven with a 3-1 victory over Grand Canyon University on Thursday night at Clyde Field. The win, combined Seattle's win and Air Force's loss clinches a first round bye and at least the No. 2 seed in the WAC Tournament for both UVU and Seattle.

The Wolverines (14-3-0, 7-1-0) got a first-half goal from Skyler Milne and second half goals from Gui Leme and Joe Barakat in winning their 14th match of the season, tying last season's win total. The Antelopes (6-8-3, 3-3-3) spoiled UVU's shutout attempt with a late goal by Andy Alanis, which keeps the Wolverines' clean sheet total at 10 overall and five in WAC play.

"It was an unfortunate goal late in the game. We needed to be a little more focused in that moment but we I thought were fantastic back-to-front. We created great scoring opportunities and really locked it down in the midfield today," said UVU head coach Greg Maas.

A familiar combo teamed up for the game's first goal in the 17th minute. An Aaron Meyer corner kick was headed in by Milne just inside the far post for an early 1-0 lead. The goal was Milne's team-high eighth on Meyer's WAC-leading eighth assist.

"First goals are so important, they change games," Maas said. "Aaron is always going to deliver the ball in a great spot and it was a world-class goal for Skyler. He does that time and time again."

It remained 1-0 until the second half when Leme and Paul Hoffmeister teamed up for goal number two in the 59th minute. Leme scored the goal – his third of the year -- on a sliding shot to the far post to extend the lead to 2-0. The assist was the third of the season for Hoffmeister who, along with Chandler Baddley, Alex Neff and Karson Payton, was named the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Team earlier Thursday.

Barakat rebounded a Connor Salmon shot for his first career goal, giving UVU a 3-0 lead in the 66th minute with Salmon registering his second assist of the season.  Alanis' goal for Grand Canyon came in the 88th minute on a rebounded shot by Wedner Delmonte.

Utah Valley hosts UNLV on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the final home game of the WAC season. Prior to the game seniors Thomas Loomis, Skyler Milne and Alex Neff will be honored.
