OREM, Utah – Paul Hoffmeister's header with seven minutes to play sent No. 14/21 Utah Valley University to its nation-leading 15th win of the season, 2-1, over UNLV on Saturday at Clyde Field.
Donnett Sackie had the game-tying goal in the final minute of the first half and then delivered the game-winning assist on Hoffmeister's eighth goal of the season.
Â
The victory sets a new single-season win record, is also the eighth straight win for the Wolverines, and propels UVU into first place in the WAC standings with 24 points. UVU (15-3-0, 8-1-0) has one game left in the regular season, at Incarnate Word next Saturday night.
Â
"This was a big win tonight. We've always had tremendous matches with UNLV," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "For Donnett to equalize that game and have the assist at the end was absolutely magical."
UNLV (6-11-1, 4-4-1) took the lead in the 44th minute of play when Danny Musovski scored on a header for his 10th goal of the season. Oscar Velazquez served it into the box for Musovski, who floated a header over
Mitch Jensen at the near post with just 1:05 left in the half.
Â
The Wolverines responded though, getting the equalizer just 39 seconds later. Following a corner kick,
Alec Felix's header hit the crossbar and was rebounded and put back in by Sackie, for his second goal of the season coming with just 26 seconds on the clock.
Â
"Our response to that goal was the first thing we talked about at half time," said Maas. "The most important part of that half was our response. And we came out a played a fantastic second half."
Â
The game remained tied until the 83rd minute when
Aaron Meyer sent the ball wide to Sackie, who crossed it into the box to Hoffmeister who put home the game-winner inside the far post from six yards out. Meyer also received credit for the assist, his WAC-leading ninth of the season.
Â
Prior to the match, the team's three seniors –
Thomas Loomis,
Skyler Milne, and
Alex Neff – were honored as part of Senior Night.
Â
"I couldn't have asked for anything more. To play with these guys, for this staff and for this university," Neff said. "We have one thing in mind right now and that's to win the regular season. We're focused on one more game."
Utah Valley looks for its first WAC title next Saturday in San Antonio at Incarnate Word. The Wolverines need three points to clinch the regular season title and top seed in the conference tournament. Seattle U -- with 23 points -- travels to Air Force for its regular season finale next weekend and needs a win or a tie, and a UVU loss to earn at least a share of the title.
