Utah Valley drops 3-1 decision to Seattle U on Senior Night

OREM, Utah—Seattle U scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 win over Utah Valley in the team's regular season finale on Friday night at Clyde Field.

Utah Valley falls to 9-7-2 overall on the season with the setback. The Wolverines wrap up WAC play with a 3-3-1 record. Seattle U improves to 12-5-1 overall and finishes league play with a perfect 7-0-0 mark.

Utah Valley opened the scoring in the 11th minute as a ball got lose in the SU box. The ball was batted around in the box until a Seattle player touched it over the goal line to give the Wolverines a 1-0 advantage.

Seattle U responded just five minutes later in the 16th minute as Natasha Howe received a cross from the foot of Brie Hooks on the right side and then knocked it into the back of the net to tie the game, 1-1.

Howe registered the first hat trick of her career as she scored in both the 69th and 71st minutes to lead the Redhawks to the 3-1 victory.

"I thought for the first 20-25 minutes of the second half that things were looking pretty good," said Utah Valley head coach Brent Anderson. "In fact, we had moved the game up to at least midfield and we were in the attacking half a bit more than we were in the first half. We didn't quite generate as many opportunities as we wanted. I think getting exposed a little bit allowed that goal and then we didn't mentally recover from it and allowed another. We know we've got work to do regardless of what position we finish in. We'll move forward and make the best of this and be prepared for the tournament."

SU out-shot UVU 10-6 on the night, including a 6-4 advantage on goal. Breanna DeWaal led the Wolverines with two shots, including one on goal. Brooklyn Nielsen recorded a pair of saves in 90 minutes of play in the box for UVU.

Utah Valley honored its seniors prior to Friday night's match. Melanie Ostler, Taylor Kirk, Lexi Felis, Abby Jameson and Kalli Suesue played their final match on the Clyde Field pitch.

"Our seniors are remarkable individuals," Anderson said. "They have brought a lot of leadership to our team. What they have taught the younger players on this team is invaluable. I hope as we head into the tournament that we can represent them a bit better than we did tonight and get a few more wins for them."

Utah Valley now preps for the WAC Tournament, Nov. 3-6, in Kansas City, Missouri. The defending champion Wolverines will enter tournament play as either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed pending the outcome of Saturday's WAC matches.
