PHOENIX, Ariz.—The Utah Valley University women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 double-overtime decision on the road to WAC foe Grand Canyon on Sunday afternoon at GCU Stadium in Phoenix.
Â
The loss drops the Wolverines to 6-6-1 overall on the season and 0-2-0 in WAC play. The Antelopes improve to 5-8-0 on the year and 1-1-0 in league play.
Â
"I thought the team played hard and put in a great effort today," Utah Valley head coach
Brent Anderson said. "We put ourselves under pressure at times with poor touches or decisions that aren't typically part of our game. We will work the next few days to regain our rhythm so that we can get back on track."
Â
Utah Valley was first to get on the scoreboard as
Kalli Suesue beat a defender to the ball and sent a pass up field to the top of the box where
Sydney Fitzpatrick settled it and connected on a shot past the GCU keeper for the score. The 70th-minute goal marks Fitzpatrick's second score of the season.
Â
Grand Canyon evened things up just two minutes later as Maria Monterroso found the back of the net to tie the match in the 73rd minute. The two teams wrapped up regulation play in a 1-1 tie to send the match into overtime.
Â
After playing even through the first overtime period, Grand Canyon's Madison Cox headed in the game winner off a McKenzie Cook free kick in the 106th minute to secure the Antelope victory.
Â
GCU out-shot Utah Valley 14-10 on the day with each team connecting on five shots on goal.
Adrene Harding led UVU with a team-high three shots, including a team-best two on goal.
Breanna DeWaal and Fitzpatrick each had two shots with one on goal.
Sarah Davis tallied three saves in 106 minutes in goal for UVU.
Â
Utah Valley will continue WAC road play at UT Rio Grande Valley and New Mexico State on Oct. 14 and 16, respectively. The Wolverines will then return to Clyde Field to begin a three-match home stand on Oct. 20 against Chicago State.
