HONOLULU - Dynasty Lauvai blasted out a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning but it wasn't enough, as Utah Valley University couldn't complete the comeback in a 4-3 setback to Portland State on Sunday morning at the Bank of Hawaii Invitational.
Trailing by two runs entering the final inning, Lauvai managed to pull the Wolverines (4-11) to within one thanks to her solo round tripper. With one out and nobody on, PSU's Alyssa Burk then managed to retire
Morgan Smith and
Kristy Snyder consecutively to end the ballgame.
Burk pitched a complete game three-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Vikings (4-11) to improve 2-1 on the season, while
Kelsey Ensign (0-1) suffered her first loss of the season for the Wolverines after giving up three runs on six hits in five innings of work.
Portland State was the first to get on the board in the contest thanks to a two-run first-inning home run from Kortney Craker. After loading the bases on a trio of walks, the Wolverines then cut the deficit in half in the third when Lauvai scored on a wild pitch to make it a 2-1 game.
UVU then briefly tied the score at 2-all in the sixth when
Brianna Gatlin came in to score on another wild pitch, but PSU struck back in the bottom of the frame with a home run from Candice Orozco and an RBI single from Shae Nelson to take the lead for good at 4-2.
Lauvai,
Brittney Vansway and
Jaymee Lawton each recorded a hit apiece to lead UVU offensively in the contest, while Shealee Lindsey led the Vikings by going 2-for-2 with a walk.
The contest marked UVU's fourth one-run setback on the weekend.
Utah Valley will close play at the Bank of Hawaii Invitational against the host Hawaii Rainbow Wahine on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. MT/12:30 p.m. HT.
