Utah Valley falls at WAC leader New Mexico State, 98-74

LAS CRUCES, N.M.—Marcel Davis scored 21 points and Konner Frey added 12 to lead the Utah Valley University men's basketball team in a 98-74 setback to WAC leader New Mexico State Saturday night at the Pan American Center.
 
The loss drops Utah Valley to 10-14 overall on the season and 4-5 in WAC play. New Mexico State improves to 16-8 on the season and 8-1 in league play.
 
NM State jumped out to a 13-3 lead just four minutes into the game. The Wolverines cut the Aggie lead to just six points, 19-13, at the 14:21 mark, but NMSU responded with a run of their own to extend its lead back into double figures and eventually a 57-32 lead at the break.
 
Utah Valley out-scored New Mexico State 42-41 in the second half but it wasn't enough as the Aggies held on the lead they built in the first half to secure their 33rd straight win over a WAC opponent at the Pan Am Center.
 
Davis recorded his fifth 20-plus point game of the season with 21 points. The senior guard connected on 6-of-11 shots from the field, including a 3-of-6 mark from beyond the arc. Davis also tallied a game-high seven assists and three rebounds.
 
Frey scored his 12 points on a 4-of-11 clip from the field, including a pair of shots from long range. He also pulled down five rebounds. Jaden Jackson and Darrious Hamilton each scored nine points. Ivory Young had eight points, while Alex Carr recorded a career-high seven points. Hayden Schenck led the Wolverines with seven rebounds.
 
After shooting just 31.2 percent in the first half, UVU connected on 51.6 percent of its shots in the second half. For the game, Utah Valley shot 42.4 percent. NM State hit 55.4 percent of its shots from the field on the night.
 
Pacal Siakam led New Mexico State with a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds for his nation-leading 21st double-double of the season.
 
Utah Valley will have the week off before continuing WAC road play at CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Feb. 13.
