EUGENE, Ore. – The prolific offense and solid pitching of No. 3 Oregon proved to be too much for Utah Valley University on Tuesday evening, as the Ducks managed to outscore UVU 26-0 en route to a doubleheader sweep at Jane Sanders Stadium in Eugene (7-0 and 19-0).
Â
The Wolverines dropped to 7-40 on the season with the setbacks while UO improved to 40-6 with the wins.
Â
The third-ranked Ducks wasted no time getting on the board in the opening game of the twin bill by scoring a pair of first-inning runs on back-to-back-to-back singles to take a quick 2-0 advantage. Following a scoreless second frame, UO then extended its lead to 5-0 after a three-run home run from Geri Ann Glasco in the third. Glasco then capped the scoring for the Ducks in the fourth with a two-run single to make it 7-0.
Â
The Wolverines got the leadoff runner on base in both the fourth and seventh innings and had two on in the sixth, but couldn't manage to push across a run as Oregon held on for the shutout.
Â
Megan Kleist and Glasco combined to shut out UVU in the contest, as the UO duo combined to pitch a seven-inning shutout. Kleist (16-3) earned the win after giving up just two hits in four innings of work, while Glasco allowed just two hits of her own in three innings of scoreless relief.
Bailey Moore was tagged with the loss for UVU after giving up four earned runs (five total) in two innings of action.
Â
Four different Wolverines finished with a hit apiece in game one, as
Morgan Smith,
Brianna Gatlin,
Brittney Vansway and
Tiani Hensley each recorded a single for UVU in the opener. Glasco led Oregon at the plate by going 3-for-3 with five runs batted in and two runs scored.
Â
The nightcap of the twin bill was more of the same, as Oregon jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first following a grand slam from Gwen Svekis. UO then tacked on seven more runs in the second on a trio of UVU miscues to extend their lead to 11-0. The Ducks then put the game away with six more runs in the third -- with four coming on their second grand slam of the game with this one coming from Janelle Lindvall -- and two more in the fourth to cap the scoring.
Â
Three Duck pitchers combined to shut out UVU in game two as they limited the Wolverines to just one hit in the ballgame. Cheridan Hawkins (17-3) earned the win for UO after giving up just one hit in three innings of work while striking out. The victory not only marked Hawkins' 17th of the season but also a school-record 101st of her career.
Kelsey Ensign suffered the loss for the Wolverines after giving up four earned runs (nine total) on five hits in 1.2 innings of work.
Â
UVU recorded its lone hit of the game in the second when
Cera Stanley reached base on a two-out infield single to the pitcher. Stanley's hit led the way for the Wolverine offense in the contest as she finished 1-for-1 from the plate. A total of three runners reached base for UVU in the nightcap, as
Jaymee Lawton and
Kristy Snyder each worked walks in the third and fifth innings, respectively.
Â
The Wolverines will conclude the trip and their 2016 regular season on Wednesday at Portland State. UVU and PSU will play a pair of games beginning at 4 p.m. MT/3 p.m. PT from the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex in Hillsboro, Oregon.
Â
