DeKALB, Ill. – No. 12 Utah Valley University scored a decisive 3-0 victory over Northern Illinois on Sunday at the NIU Adidas Invitational. The Wolverines (4-1-0) bounced back after suffering their first defeat on Friday night, getting goals from three different players in the win.
Karson Payton,
Alex Neff and
Aaron Caprio each scored their first goals of the season for UVU. Payton also assisted on Caprio's goal while
Skyler Milne had two assists and
Aaron Meyer also added an assist. Meyer was named to the All-Tournament Team along with
Nic Harguindeguy and
Giovanny Vazquez.
Â
"The response by this team after Friday's loss was absolutely first class," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "We controlled the match, played our style, defended well, and scored three very good goals. The team's performance is exactly what we needed as we prepare for two very difficult opponents at Clyde Field this coming week."
Â
Just moments after the starting whistle, Milne beat his defender in the corner and found Payton in the box, who scored off the right post and in for his first goal of the season. The goal came just 1:27 in and only 21 seconds behind the fastest goal in program history, scored earlier this season by Milne in a win over Evansville.
Â
A free kick resulted in UVU's second goal; Meyer served the ball into the box from 40 yards out where Milne directed a header toward the goal and Neff's header went over the top of the keeper for a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute.
Â
Caprio made it 3-0 just three minutes later, scoring his first goal as Wolverine. On a counter attack, Payton took it up the right sideline from the far end of the field and through several defenders. He played it to the middle of the field where he found a streaking Caprio up the left side, who scored into the lower right corner.
Â
Utah Valley had a decided edge on the stat sheet, finishing with 14 shots (nine on goal) while limiting the Huskies (0-4-2) to six shots, two of which were on goal.
Elliott Rubio recorded both saves for the Wolverines while playing the first 45 minutes in goal.
Mitch Jensen saw his first action of the season, playing the second half in goal and combining on UVU's second shutout of the year.
The Wolverines return to Clyde Field this week with a contest against No. 21 Gonzaga on Thursday in a match that will start at 5 p.m. MT. UVU also hosts CSUN on Saturday at 7 p.m. with both games part of Homecoming Week, celebrating the school's 75th anniversary.
