OREM, Utah – 19th-ranked Utah Valley University handed No. 20 Gonzaga its first loss of the season, with
Aaron Meyer supplying the game's only goal in a 1-0 decision on Thursday at Clyde Field.
Â
Meyer's goal, in the 24th minute, proved to be the game-winner as the Wolverines (5-1-0) improved to 3-0 against the Bulldogs (5-1-1) all-time.
"They (Gonzaga) are a very good side, a spirited side. They play great soccer and we knew tonight was going to be a tough match and one that we looked forward to," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "We were happy to be home. We had our 12th Wolverines behind us and we knew on our pitch we were going to have a lot of the ball. I thought we executed well and maybe were deserving of an extra goal or two," Maas said.
Â
The goal came on a free kick just outside the 18 with Meyer firing just inside the near post to register his first goal of the season.
Â
"You've got to take your chances with set pieces. We work a lot on those in practice so it's good to take advantage of it," said Meyer.
Â
The shutout is the team's second in a row and third of the season. The Wolverine defense did not allow a shot on goal in earning UVU's second win over a ranked foe so far this season. With the win, UVU improved to 3-1-1 all-time at home against nationally-ranked opponents.
Â
Utah Valley now hosts CSUN on Saturday night at 7 p.m. MT to wrap up Homecoming Week and UVU's 75th anniversary celebration.
