DAVIS, Calif. – No. 18 Utah Valley University got a first-half goal from
Alex Neff in earning a 1-0 shutout of UC Davis on Saturday in the Copa de Causeway at Aggie Soccer Field. The win marks the program's 30th in just two and a half seasons of existence.
Neff's goal came on a header at the 21-minute mark and off of a rebound of a
Skyler Milne header on goal on a free kick. The win for the Wolverines (7-2-0) came in the final non-conference match of the season and also snapped the Aggies' (4-3-2) three-match win streak.
"I couldn't be more proud of this team, their resiliency, and commitment to win," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "Six of our nine matches have been on the road. We're both tired and banged-up, which makes our results even that much more rewarding."
It was the second goal of the season for Neff -- the reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Week -- and the fourth assist for Milne, who leads Utah Valley and ranks second in the WAC with 12 points.
The shutout was the Wolverines' fifth of the season and fourth in the last five matches.
Elliott Rubio had four saves in goal in earning his fourth career shutout. Both teams had 11 shots with six of UVU's coming on goal.
"Today was about heart and determination," Maas said. "We'll enjoy it for a day or two and then begin preparations for WAC play next week at Seattle."
Conference play begins next Friday, Sept. 30 at defending champion Seattle University. The Redhawks were picked to repeat as WAC champions in the coaches' preseason poll with Utah Valley selected second after finishing in that spot in both the regular season and tournament in 2015. It's the only match of the week for UVU.
