Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

CSU Bakersfield edges Utah Valley in overtime, 63-59

OREM, Utah – CSU Bakersfield edged Utah Valley University, 63-59, in overtime on Saturday afternoon in WAC women's basketball in the newly-named Lockhart Arena.

Taylor Gordon led UVU (6-13, 1-3) with 22 points, scoring 20-plus for the sixth time in the last seven games, while also grabbing 11 rebounds for her team-high tying fourth double-double this year. Jazmyne Bartee, who scored 11 points in fourth quarter and overtime, finished with career highs of 23 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocks for CSU Bakersfield (7-11, 2-2).

"Obviously, it's disappointing not to win," said UVU head coach Cathy Nixon. "We played well enough to give ourselves a chance but a few missed free-throws and mistakes on the defensive end and it didn't go our way, but I was proud of the way the girls fought."

Bartee hit the game-tying layup with 3.0 seconds left in regulation to force the overtime. That shot answered a corner three from Gabrielle Leos with 4.5 seconds remaining to give the Wolverines a 54-52 lead.

Utah Valley led 57-56 following a Keana Delos Santos 3-pointer with 4:09 left in overtime before Aja Williams connected on a 3-pointer to give the Roadrunners the lead for good. Bartee followed Williams' three with a bucket and a free-throw, making it 62-57 with 2:07 to go.

Gordon scored 10 of her points in the fourth quarter while finishing 12-of-13 from the free-throw line. Sam Lubke reached double-digits for the 13th straight contest with 10 points and Mariah Seals also added 10 points.

CSU Bakersfield had a 45-42 edge on the glass, also pulling down 21 offensive rebounds while UVU had 20 offensive boards.

The Roadrunners used a 21-5 run during the latter part of the third and early fourth quarter to turn a 10-point deficit into a 46-40 lead with 7:48 left in the game. Gordon scored the game's next seven points, giving the Wolverines a 47-46 lead on a free-throw with 5:48 left.

Prior to the game, Utah Valley University held a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to officially commemorate the newly-named Rebecca D. Lockhart Arena. Lockhart, the former Utah Speaker of the House, died in 2015. Utah Governor Gary Herbert, along with President Matthew S. Holland, other UVU administrators, and members of the Lockhart family, were present for the event.

The 'Runners jumped out to a 13-4 lead to start the game but the Wolverines finished the first quarter on an 8-0 run to pull to within one point. UVU scored eight points in the first quarter off of seven CSUB turnovers and got to the line 10 times, converting on eight of those attempts.

Keana Delos Santos hit a three from the corner to open the second quarter, giving Utah Valley its first lead, 15-13, and extending the run to 11-0. After not scoring for nearly five minutes to end the first and begin the second, CSUB suffered through a nearly six-minute scoreless stretch in the second, allowing UVU to mount a 10-2 run to close the half and lead 27-23.

Seals knocked down a 3-pointer on the Wolverines' first possession of the second half and Gordon followed with a jumper to give UVU a 32-23 lead, pushing the scoring run to 15-2. Seals hit another three at the 7:34 mark of the third quarter to extend the Utah Valley lead to 10, 35-25.

UVU crashed the offensive glass for  20 offensive rebounds on the day to finish with its best performance on the offensive glass since grabbing a season-best 23 in the season-opener versus BYU. The WAC's top offensive rebounder, Lubcke finished with seven offensive rebounds, Leya Harvey and Jordan Holland grabbed four a piece and Gordon reeled in three.

Utah Valley travels to UT Rio Grande Valley and New Mexico State for two league games next week. The Wolverines' next home game will be Feb. 4 against Seattle University in Lockhart Arena.
