BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A penalty kick early in the second half proved to be the game's only score as CSU Bakersfield picked up three points in 1-0, Western Athletic Conference win over Utah Valley University on Sunday at Main Soccer Field.
On a free kick less than a minute into the second half, UVU's (3-6-1, 0-1-1)
Connor Salmon and the CSUB's Victor Romero were both issued red cards for an apparent scuffle. The fouls were called in the Wolverines' 18 and the Roadrunners (3-6-0, 1-1-0) were awarded a penalty kick, which Jamie Carey-Morrell put away for the game-winner.
"I couldn't be more proud of this team's effort today, we were the better team throughout, and deserved better," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "A referee decision changed the complexity of the match, it's as simple as that. We can only regroup and focus on two much-needed results next week in Texas."
With both teams playing with 10 on the field following the double reds, Utah Valley's attempt to earn an equalizer was thwarted. The Wolverines had 14 shots in the match with nine of those coming in the second half. Four of the shots were on frame for UVU, while the 'Runners finished with eight shots, including four on goal.
CSU Bakersfield was whistled for 18 fouls including five yellow cards in addition to the red. Salmon's red was the only time the Wolverines were shown a card.
Utah Valley travels to Texas next weekend for contests at Incarnate Word on Friday and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Sunday.
