SAN DIEGO – For the second straight game,
Gui Leme scored the game-winner and
Elliott Rubio recorded a clean sheet as Utah Valley University notched a 1-0 victory at San Diego State on Sunday night. The win gave the Wolverines (3-1-0) the championship of the Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Tournament.
Leme scored in the 11th minute, getting his second game-winning goal in as many games. Rubio followed up his seven-save performance in Friday's 2-0 win over Cal State Fullerton with three more saves and another shutout.
"It was a very focused performance for 90 minutes and we executed a solid game plan," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "To come in and get two clean sheets against Fullerton and San Diego State, and win the tournament, is truly wonderful. I'm really proud of the boys."
Leme was named the tournament's offensive MVP with Rubio the defensive MVP. Joining the two on the all-tournament team were
Chandler Baddley,
Blake Leonetti,
Karson Payton, and
Giovanny Vazquez.
Leme also scored the game-winner and added an assist to complement Rubio's career-high in saves on Friday night. His goal on Sunday came from 20 yards out, into the lower left corner.
"We expect a lot of Gui and he expects a lot of himself. What he did this weekend was fantastic, and Elliott was an absolute stalwart at the back. His leadership and ability to organize are what I'm most proud of," Maas said.
The Aztecs, a 2016 NCAA Tournament team, finished with seven shots to UVU's eight. Both clubs had three shots on goal.
The Wolverines return to Clyde Field for two matches during Homecoming Week at Utah Valley University. UVU hosts Sacramento State on Friday at 7 p.m. MT and No. 17 Omaha on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT.
NOTES: San Diego State is an affiliate member of the Pac 12 in men's soccer and is the first of two teams from the conference on the regular season schedule (at Washington, Sept. 21).
