OREM, Utah – A pair of goals off of corner kicks helped Utah Valley University to its fifth straight win, 2-0, over UMKC on Saturday night at Clyde Field.
Samuel Krommenhoek and
Alec Felix both scored for the Wolverines, who kept pace with No. 15 Air Force to remain atop the WAC table.
UVU is now 8-5-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the WAC while UMKC drops to 2-10-0 and 1-5-0. The Wolverines did not allow the Kangaroos a shot on goal, the third time this season UVU has not surrendered a shot on frame from its opponent.
"I was pleased with our performance tonight. We demonstrated great patience and maturity," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "Full credit to the boys, they're playing tremendous soccer, and are playing with a competitive edge that's a direct reflection of the hard work and commitment to one another they exhibit each and every day."
Krommenhoek's first career goal, in the 38th minute, went as the game winner. The first of the two set-piece goals came on a corner kick off the foot of
Zach Maas, who collected his third assist of the season. Krommenhoek got his head on the ball six yards out that ricocheted off of a defender and the diving goalkeeper and into the side netting at the near post.
The lead remained 1-0 until late, when Felix got an insurance goal with just over 15 minutes remaining, on a
Carter Johnson-assisted corner kick. Felix rose among three defenders and won the ball with a header, scoring into the right corner.
The Wolverines outshot UMKC 17-8 overall while earning the team's fifth shutout – and goalkeeper
Joseph Wheelwright's fourth – of the season.
Utah Valley returns to action next Thursday at 7 p.m. MT on Clyde Field against Seattle U, the reigning WAC Tournament champions and preseason pick to win this year's regular season. On Saturday, Oct. 20, the Wolverines host San José State in the final home match of the season.
