OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University won its sixth straight match to stay tied atop the WAC standings, 2-0 over Seattle University on Thursday night at Clyde Field.
Samuel Krommenhoek and
Zach Maas combined for the second game-winner in as many matches, and
Blake Frischknecht blasted his fifth goal of the season for UVU.
The win gives the Wolverines (9-5-0, 6-1-0) three key points and allows them to keep pace with No. 15 Air Force. Both teams sit atop the WAC table with 18 points. It's also UVU's first victory over Seattle U (10-5-0, 4-3-0), the defending WAC Tournament champions and preseason favorite this year. The Redhawks are also ranked 18th in this week's Soccer America poll.
"Tonight's performance was fantastic and the result was deserving. Seattle's a great side, and I know our entire team both past and present, will enjoy this victory," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "Full credit to the boys, the confidence and belief they have in each other is something special. We'll enjoy this tonight, but tomorrow we get back to work and prepare for SJSU this Saturday on Senior Night."
In the 26th minute, Maas lofted a free kick from just outside the center circle into the box, where Krommenhoek – facing away from goal and with a defender on his back – got his head on the ball, sending it back and off the right post and in for a 1-0 UVU lead. The assist was Maas' team-high fourth of the season.
On a free kick just outside the 18 in the 56th minute, Frischknecht delivered a perfect strike, bending the ball past the wall and to the far post, where it crushed the side netting for the 2-0 lead. The goal is his team-leading fifth this season.
Joseph Wheelwright collected three saves, earning his fifth – and the team's sixth – shutout this season. It was also his fourth clean sheet during the WAC season.
The Redhawks got 13 shots off, many of which came during the final minutes as they tried to get on the board. Seattle U finished with three shots on goal, while Utah Valley was on frame five times in 10 total shots.
Utah Valley now hosts San José State on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Spartans fell 4-0 at Air Force on Thursday.
