RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A second-half goal from
Austin Buxton helped Utah Valley University to the program's 50th win, a 1-0 shutout at California Baptist University on Friday afternoon.
The Wolverines (6-5-0, 3-1-0) gained three points in the WAC table, winning their third straight game in league play while earning all-time win No. 50 in the midst of the fifth season of men's soccer at UVU. The Lancers dropped to 5-6-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the WAC.
"I couldn't be prouder of this team and the milestone we've reached for our program. An inspiring, gritty performance from start to finish that everyone played a key part in," said head coach
Greg Maas, who has coached the Wolverines to all 50 wins. "We'll deservedly enjoy this tonight, recover, and get ready for a CSUB side that's on a solid run as well."
On the goal,
Zach Maas flicked a ball forward that went into traffic and deflected towards Buxton, who collected it with his first touch and then beat the oncoming goalkeeper and a CBU defender. The game-winner was Buxton's fourth goal of the season, tying for team-high honors with
Blake Frischknecht. The assist from Maas was his second of the season.
California Baptist played the final 13 minutes down a man after a red card was issued to Sebastian Wiesbock. A late header from Nick Forrester in the final 30 seconds of the match served as CBU's last chance but UVU goalkeeper
Joseph Wheelwright punched it away, securing the win and his -- and the team's -- fourth shutout of the season. Wheelwright collected four saves in the match
The Wolverines will stay in California and make the trip north to face CSU Bakersfield on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT. The Runners upset No. 7 Air Force, 1-0, on Friday in Bakersfield.
