BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Leo Fuchs' first career goal with less than 10 minutes left sent Utah Valley University to a 2-1 win at CSU Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon at Main Soccer Field. The victory comes on the heels of Friday's 1-0 win at California Baptist, and is the Wolverines' (7-5-0, 4-1-0) fourth straight overall, keeping them atop the WAC table with 12 points.
In the 81st minute, Fuchs teamed up with
Luis Garza on a give-and-go, taking a pass from Garza and scoring on a sliding toe-poke into the upper right 90 for the game-winner.
"What more can I say? This team's character and commitment to one another has never wavered, and we will grind to the bitter end," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "Bakersfield is not an easy place to play, but our quality was the difference, and the game-winner was a thing of beauty. It's now time to enjoy two road victories, get healthy, and prepare for UMKC on Clyde Field next Saturday."
The Runners (4-7-1, 2-2-1) struck first with a Niklas Koerber goal in the 21st minute. Koerber found a cross from Tom Shepherd right at the goalmouth and chipped it in for the 1-0 lead.
Utah Valley got the equalizer in the final minute of the half. A long
Samuel Krommenhoek throw in found
Caleb Wight's head and was directed toward the goal for
Alec Felix, who got his head on it and tied it just 31 seconds left before the break. Both Krommenhoek and Wight received assists on the goal.
Joseph Wheelwright collected five saves and survived 13 corner kicks from the Runners with the Wolverines taking only one corner kick on the day. CSUB had eight shots, six on goal, while UVU finished with seven shots, five of which were on frame.
The Wolverines begin a three-game homestand next Saturday against UMKC on Clyde Field at 7 p.m. MT in the only match of the week.
