LOGAN, Utah – Jordan Holland had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, but Utah Valley University's late rally fell short in a 67-62 loss at Utah State University on Saturday afternoon. The game ended a stretch of four straight road contests for UVU.
The Wolverines (4-6) trailed by 16 points with 7:09 remaining and held the Aggies (5-5) scoreless for over six minutes during an 11-0 run to get within five with under a minute to go. Utah State would hit all four of their attempts from the line in the final minute to hold on.
Utah Valley out-rebounded USU 38-25 with 14 coming on the offensive glass, leading to 13 second chance points. But 28 turnovers from the Wolverines allowed the Aggies 33 points off of those turnovers.
"Jordan was great today. I think it was her best game overall on both ends of the court. She played with confidence and she just went and got the ball and was so active defensively. She really kept us in the game," said UVU head coach
Cathy Nixon. "But when you give up 33 points off of turnovers you really make it difficult on yourself. That being said we still gave ourselves a chance at the end. We've made improvements but now it's a just a matter of putting those all together. It will be good to get back home next week."
Utah Valley trailed by 16 to start the fourth and quickly cut it to 10 early in the fourth but saw the lead jump right back to 16 as the teams traded 6-0 runs to begin the quarter. The Wolverines came back with seven straight to get within nine, 63-54, with 4:37 remaining.
After both teams struggled to score, a Holland layup with 1:55 left made it 63-56, before the junior put back a missed shot to get Utah Valley within five, 63-58, with 47 seconds to go.
In addition to Holland,
Alexis Cortez scored in double figures with 11 for UVU while Utah State got 16 points from Olivia West and 14 from Steph Gorman and a career-high 13 assists from Eliza West.
The Wolverines hit 49 percent (25-51) from the floor with Holland connecting on 10 of her 14 attempts. Utah State was 26-for-61 (42.6 percent) from the field.
UVU jumped out to an 11-4 lead, hitting five of its first seven attempts from the floor. A corner three from
Madison Grange capped an 11-2 run to take the seven-point lead. Holland knocked down another triple and Grange hit two free throws to make it 16-6. Olivia West hit back-to-back 3-pointers, including one right before the first quarter horn to make it 16-12 after one.
Utah State's run continued into the second quarter, with West hitting her third trey and Gorman following with another three that capped eight straight points, and a 14-2 run overall, that gave USU a 20-18 lead.
UVU lead 22-20 when a 7-0 Utah State run gave the Aggies a 27-22 lead with 5:31 left in until the half. Utah Valley trailed six right before the break when Holland grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to make it 33-29 halftime score. Eliza West had nine of her assists in the first half.
Both West and Gorman continued to hit from distance in the third with Gorman's fourth 3-pointer giving the Aggies a 43-33 lead at the 7:02 mark. UVU cut it to six, 45-39, on a pair of free throws from Holland, but wouldn't score again until a Holland lay up right before the end of the quarter. Utah State ran off 12 straight points in between the Holland foul shots and layup, with all 12 coming off of UVU turnovers. Utah State took a 57-41 lead in the final quarter.
The Wolverines return home for two games next week to wrap up the pre-Christmas schedule. UVU hosts Weber State in its final in-state game of the year on Tuesday at 11 a.m. MT in Lockhart Arena. On Saturday, the Wolverines welcome UC Riverside to the UCCU Center for another 11 a.m. MT tip.
