LARAMIE, Wyo. – 25th-ranked Utah Valley University dropped at Big 12 Conference dual at No. 17 Wyoming, 38-4, on Friday night.
Kimball Bastian picked up the lone Wolverine win, topping Dewey Krueger, 10-2, in a major decision.
The Wolverines were without their two highest-ranked wrestlers in 125-pound freshman
Taylor LaMont and 165-pound sophomore
Demetrius Romero. LaMont is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA RPI in his weight class and Romero is No. 5 in the RPI at 165 pounds.
The Cowboys jumped out quickly with falls at 141 and 149 and a tech fall at 157. Top-ranked Bryce Meredith pinned
Matt Findlay (3:56) to open the dual before Sam Turner recorded a fall over
Matthew Ontiveros (4:37). After #10 Archie Colgan picked up a tech fall for Wyoming and a forfeit at 165 pounds, the Cowboys held a commanding 23-0 lead.
Bastian, ranked No. 17 in the NCAA RPI and No. 29 in the Coaches' rankings racked up four takedowns in his 10-2 win over Dewey Krueger.
Wyoming notched narrow wins in the next three matches, with Chaz Polson edging Gary Janzter at 184 pounds, 7-6 in overtime. Luke Paine upset
Tanner Orndorff, 3-2, at 197 pounds and Sam Eagan notched an upset over
Dustin Dennison, 7-6, also in overtime.
Utah Valley will face Air Force on Saturday night in Colorado Springs in the final road dual of the season. The match is slated to start at 7 p.m. MT and can be seen on FloWresting via subscription. The final 2018 dual is next Friday, Feb. 16 at home in Lockhart Arena against Northern Colorado.
