UVU announces new six-year contract for coach Mark Pope

OREM
—Utah Valley University men's basketball coach Mark Pope has signed a new contract that will keep him with the Wolverines through the 2023-24 season. The new contract is a six-year agreement that replaces Pope's previous five-year deal that was set to expire in 2020.

"We've got some real momentum going at Utah Valley University and in our athletic department because of what men's basketball has been able to accomplish these past three years," said UVU athletics director Vince Otoupal. "Coach still had two years remaining on his contract but we wanted to be aggressive because he's the guy that we believe will continue to move us forward. We're taking every step that is necessary to take our athletic department to the next level."

Pope recently wrapped up one of the most successful seasons in UVU history as he guided the Wolverines to a school-record 23 wins and the best end-of-season KenPom.com ranking in UVU history (No. 91). Pope has taken the Wolverines from a No. 343 KenPom.com ranking in 2015 to a school-record No. 91 ranking in 2018—the biggest three-year jump in the nation during that time period.

This past season, Pope led the Wolverines to a second-straight appearance at the College Basketball Invitational where the team hosted its first-ever postseason national tournament game in a win over Eastern Washington. In 2017, Pope's team made a run to the Final Four of the CBI as he guided the team to the school's first-ever national postseason tournament victories.

Pope's teams have been impressive in the classroom with his players earning Academic All-WAC honors 19 times. His team continues to hold one of the top team GPAs in the country and has earned back-to-back NABC Team Academic Excellence awards. His 2015-16 team was one of just seven programs in the country to have five of its players named to the NABC Honors Court. He also had two players earn the Honors Court awards during the 2016-17 season.

Pope also played a central role in getting the NUVI Basketball Center constructed and completed in 2017. He helped raise the funds for the 14,500-square-foot building, which is a new practice and conditioning facility that houses both the men's and women's basketball teams.

"This is a really special day for me because my whole heart is here at Utah Valley University," said Pope. "I'm thankful to President Holland, Val Peterson, and Vince Otoupal for putting their trust in me and showing our program another level of commitment. I love this place and this is where I want to be. Over the course of the last three years, Lee Anne and I have fallen absolutely in love with this university and its unique mission. We love the students and the administrators and faculty here. We're really proud of what we have accomplished over the last three years but this contract signifies what we really deep down believe that we're barely scratching the surface of what can be accomplished here. I'm also excited to work with our new president, Dr. Astrid Tuminez, who will be taking our university to another level on a worldwide stage."

 Quotes

"I've said from day one that athletics plays a crucial role on a university campus. It's not what we set out to do as our main purpose. Our main purpose is an educational one, but we can't really be what we are supposed to be as a university without a terrific athletics program, what is says about the university, the values that it incorporates, and the prominence that it gives to the institution. I believe that to my core. We've made this a real investment and what's exciting about today is that it not only affirming Mark for what we've done the last number of years but it's a tremendous signal about where we are moving forward, not just athletically but as a whole institution. That's what comes with the Mark Pope brand. To have him for another six years is a tremendous signal internally, externally, and I can't think of a more exciting note to end my administration on than to get this wrapped up. What comes through with coach Pope is first and foremost is the quality of his humanity. This is a guy that loves what he does and loves the people he does it with. He brings an unparalleled passion to it all and that just gets the rest of us excited and we feel apart of it and we want to go support him and do whatever we can go make it work and that's what his teams do for him and that's what we do for him and he makes us better in the process."

-President Matthew S. Holland

"I think this shows how much the university continues to mature as a Division I program. We're really excited about what coach Pope has done in his first three years. He's really taken the program to some places that we wanted to go to and we think he can continue to move it on to where he's winning championships. I think this commitment from us is about what we think he will do in the future and his vision he has for our athletic program here. We're just excited about what coach Pope means, the kind of person he is, the way he works with his athletes, the way he works with our campus community and donors and the supporters of his basketball program. He's really just taken us to another level and we think he can even go further with it. As we grow and mature as an institution, we're also seeing that in coach Pope. He's a much more experienced head coach than he was three years ago and we are just excited about the decisions and the things he is doing with our program."

-Val Peterson, Vice President of Finance and Administration

"This is a big one for us today because coach Pope has set a new bar for the entire athletic department and for the entire university. President Holland talked about what a value and what a return on investment coach Pope has been for the university and for our athletic department. The bar has been raised and the effort that coach Pope and his family have put into this university has been tremendous. Being able to do this today. The commitment of the university to coach Pope and the commitment back from the university to coach Pope is a big thing for us. It's going to reverberate throughout the entire university and certainly throughout the athletic department. It shows going forward today that this is not an extension. This is a brand new contract for a guy who has earned it. Coach has proven that he is a winner not just on the court but off the court as well. This is a guy that we need to have around for a real long time and we've solidified that today."
