OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University's upset bid of No. 13 UC Davis fell short in a 1-0 loss in front of 2,286 fans at Clyde Field on Tuesday night. The Wolverines (3-4-0) seemed to have earned the equalizer from
Alec Felix in the 87th minute, but UVU was whistled offside.
Luis Garza got his head on a deep ball from
Ben Perkins right at the 18 and led Felix, who sent the crowd into a frenzy, but the flag was up, preserving the shutout and win for the Aggies (6-0-2) who extended their unbeaten streak to 13 games dating back to last season.
"I couldn't be more pleased with our tactical preparation and execution, and candidly, we deserved better in the end," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "This team is hungry, we have a big chip on our shoulders, and we're ready to open WAC play this Saturday in Houston."
After a scoreless first half, UC Davis broke through early in the second when Robert Mejia rebounded a Marte Formico shot and directed it into the lower left corner with his left foot. Mejia touched a pass forward to Formico who got his foot on it right in front of the oncoming goalkeeper
Joseph Wheelwright. Wheelwright stopped Formico's chance, but Mejia was there to clean it up and shot it past a diving
Blake Leonetti for the game's only goal.
That game was even statistically, with UVU finishing with 12 shots, four on goal, and UC Davis getting off 11 shots, three that were on goal. A total of 14 fouls were called in the match, eight coming against the Aggies, and Utah Valley held a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks.
The Wolverines will now head to Houston for the 2018 WAC opener for both teams, at Houston Baptist on Saturday night at 7 p.m. CT/6 p.m. MT.
