UVU drops 83-78 decision to New Mexico State

OREM—Jake Toolson scored a game-high 26 points to lead Utah Valley in an 83-76 setback to New Mexico State on Saturday night at the UCCU Center. The loss snaps UVU's 22-game home win streak, which was the second-longest streak in the nation.

Trailing 7-6 just three minutes into the first half, Isaiah White connected on a shot that sparked a 16-3 UVU run to give the Wolverines a 22-10 lead with 12:29 to go. NMSU countered right back with a 10-2 run to cut the UVU lead to just four points, 24-20 with 8:30 remaining in the half. Utah Valley outscored the Aggies 15-13 over the final eight minutes to take a 39-33 lead into halftime.

With the Wolverines hanging on to a 43-39 lead just three minutes into the second half, NM State's Terrell Brown and JoJo Zamora knocked down back-to-back threes as part of a 9-2 run that gave the Aggies a 48-45 lead with 15:20 to play. The two teams then played through eight ties and 12 lead changes over the next 10 minutes. Tied 66-66 with 5:40 to play, NM State scored six unanswered points to take a 7266 lead with just three minutes to play. The two teams played even the rest of the way as NMSU secured the 83-78 win.

Jake Toolson scored his game-high 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field, including a 2-of-4 mark from long range. Toolson connected on 2-of-3 free throws, snapping his streak of 41 consecutive free throws made, which ties the UVU school record.

Ben Nakwaasah scored 13 points on a 5-of-6 clip from the field. The senior guard also pulled down three rebounds and dished out a pair of assists. Wyatt Lowell was also in double figures with 12 points as he connected on a perfect 4-of-4 shots from beyond the arc. Connor Toolson had eight points with a team-high five rebounds.

Eli Chuha led New Mexico State with 20 points, followed by Brown with 19 points and Zamora with 13.
