Wolverines rally, hang on for 75-67 road win at UMKC

KANSAS CITY, MO – Jake Toolson finished with a 23 point, 10 rebound double-double as Utah Valley knocked off Kansas City, 75-67, for their first conference road win of the year. The win brings the Wolverines to 14-7 on the season, including 3-3 in conference. The Roos fall to 7-13 on the year and 2-3 in conference play.

"I can't say enough about all our guys," said Utah Valley head coach Mark Pope. "This is a really hard game for us and we had such a limit roster and now we were missing multiple guys from our rotation and when it was time for our other guys to step up, they were able to get it done."

The Wolverines started out slow from the floor as UMKC took a 22-13 lead over the first 9:53 of the game. After exchanging baskets, Utah Valley closed the half on a 20-4 run, led by TJ Washington and Richard Harward. The Wolverines held the Roos scoreless for almost six minutes during the run and finished the half shooting over 60 percent from the field.

Wyatt Lowell hit a three to start off the second half to extend the lead to 13, but UMKC responded with a 15-5 run to cut the lead to 48-45 with 16:04 to go in the game. Both teams would go back and forth but critical free throws from Toolson and Hayden Schenck kept the Wolverines ahead. The Roos would cut the lead down to one point but UVU was able to hold on for the 75-67 win.

Utah Valley finished the game shooting 51.9 percent from the floor and outrebounded UMKC 31-24. Toolson led the team in both scoring and rebounds and TJ Washington added a team-high six assists to go along with 11 points. Harward finished the night with a career high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds. Lowell became the first UVU freshman to start a game since Jared Stutzman started against New Mexico State on Jan. 28, 2017.

The Wolverines head to Illinois to square off with Chicago State on Jan. 26 at 1:05pm MST. Utah Valley theb hosts Cal Baptist in the UCCU Center in the first-ever matchup between the two schools.
