OREM, Utah – Alec Felix's early goal held up and Utah Valley University won its fifth straight match, 1-0, over California Baptist on Saturday at Clyde Field. The Wolverines (8-3-1) improved to 5-0-0 and lead the WAC table with 15 points in after five matches in an 11-game league schedule.
"Today wasn't easy. CBU is a good side, but we found a way to win when we weren't at our best, and good teams learn how to do that," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "The depth of our team continues to impress. Our work rate and commitment to one another has been the difference. Now it's time to get healthy and prepare for a tough match next week against Kansas City."
The Felix goal came less than seven minutes into the contest and was the senior's third of the season.
Luis Vargas fired a shot from 16 yards out that was deflected before Felix found it inside the six and stuck in the back of the net for the game-winner. Vargas received an assist on the play.
Mitch Jensen recorded his second straight clean sheet -- his fourth of the season – and the team's sixth, with four of those coming in five WAC contests. UVU's only goal allowed so far in conference play did not come in the run of play, but on a penalty kick at UTRGV.
Jensen had three saves while Lancers' (3-8-2, 2-2-1) goalkeeper Albert Escuin recorded five saves in the match. The Wolverines staved off a flurry of shots late, including one in which
Aaron Caprio helped UVU earn a team save during a three-shot spurt in a matter of seconds from California Baptist.
Utah Valley will travel to Kansas City next weekend for a Saturday contest against the Roos. That match will begin a 7 p.m. CT/6 p.m. MT.
