LAS CRUCES, N.M - Utah Valley managed a set off of WAC's No. 1 ranked New Mexico State but fell short in the match, 1-3 (25-27, 28-26, 19-25, 23-25) on Thursday night in Las Cruces.
Sets one and two both split between UVU and NMSU (1-1), both sets ending in extra points (25-27, 28-26). The Wolverine-Aggie battle led to 26 tie scores and 12 lead changes in only the first two sets of play. A trio of Wolverines tallied a couple of kills in set one, from
Tori Dorius,
Jasmine Niutupuivaha and
Kaili Downs, while
Kazna Tarawhiti added three alone. In the second set victory, four Wolverines collected three or more kills.
Bailey Christensen added three in her first-set appearance, alongside
Megan Childs and Dorius again with three while Tarawhiti posted five kills. Utah Valley grabbed the only win of the night on a .275% attack average as a team with 29 total kills.
Sets three and four went to New Mexico State, not without the Wolverines collecting 17 more kills as Tarawhiti led UVU with seven kills at the net.
Makaila Jarema, Niutupuivaha and Tarawhiti topped the UVU defense as Jarema collected six blocks, Niutupuivaha with four and Tarawhiti with five. In total, Utah Valley posted 20 blocks on the night. Jarema also tallied a .333% attack average on her four kills on the front line.
As a team, the Wolverines tallied 46 total kills and matched the Aggies with 11 blocks. UVU posted 57 digs from the back row and a pair of service aces. Tarawhiti collected 15 kills and five blocks and teammate Childs tallied 10 kills for a .304% attack average.
UVU now heads to Texas for a matchup against UT Rio Grande Valley on October 28 at 6pm MT.
